Paris is a symbol of romance, style, and life in a big city. Yet, something surprising has been happening in recent years. People are leaving. And the main reason is a simple but fundamental issue – housing.
Property prices in Paris have soared to a level that fewer and fewer people can afford. An average price of around 10,000 euros per square meter means that owning an apartment is more of a dream than a reality for many residents.
Statistics show a clear trend. Since 2012, the population has gradually declined. From over 2.2 million, Paris has dropped to approximately 2.05 million. Each year, about 20,000 people leave.
Interestingly, this is not a natural decline. On the contrary, more Parisians are being born than are dying. The problem is that an increasing number of people are leaving the city. And the reasons? High costs, a change in lifestyle, or the need for more space, for example, after the birth of a child.
The situation is not easy for those who want to rent. The supply is shrinking and prices are rising. Some apartments remain empty or are used for short-term rentals to tourists, further worsening availability.
At the same time, it is true that people who would normally buy their own homes are staying in rentals longer. This further clogs the entire market.
It is therefore not surprising that interest in housing outside the city center is growing. The area around Paris is now home to over ten million people and represents a more affordable alternative for many.
Thus, Paris faces a paradox. It remains one of the most attractive cities in the world, but for everyday life, it is becoming increasingly unaffordable. Perhaps this is its greatest challenge for the years to come: finding a balance between prestige and real life.
